In a move to revitalize the environment and combat deforestation, Lucknow’s Akbar Nagar has undergone a significant transformation and will now be known as ‘Saumitra Van’ (forest). This initiative is part of the ‘Ped Lagao, Ped Bachao Jan Abhiyan – 2024’ (Plant Trees Save Trees campaign) launched by the Uttar Pradesh government with the goal of planting over 36.5 crore trees across the state.
The campaign was inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in ‘Saumitra Van’ on Saturday, symbolizing the beginning of a major effort to restore the region’s natural landscape. The government has taken decisive action to address the encroachment and deterioration of the 28-kilometer-long Kukrail River, which originates from Asti village of Bakshi Ka Talab and flows into the Gomti River in Lucknow.
A total of 10,000 saplings will be planted in ‘Saumitra Van’, comprising 6,000 big plants and 4,000 small plants, including various species such as rosewood, jamun, vine, Arjun, mango, tamarind, Amla, Jackfruit, Guava, and more. In addition, the government plans to introduce 10 herb species like Sarpagandha, Aloe Vera, and bush species such as lemon, cranberry, and Chandni. Furthermore, the government aims to establish ‘Saumitra Van’ and ‘Shakti Van’ on 25 acres of the Kukrail riverfront.
The transformation of Akbar Nagar into ‘Saumitra Van’ offers a promising vision for environmental conservation and community rejuvenation, showcasing the government’s commitment to sustainable practices and the preservation of natural resources. This bold endeavor represents a crucial step towards a greener and more sustainable future for the people of Lucknow and the state of Uttar Pradesh.
