New Safety Guidelines Proposed for Women in Uttar Pradesh
Amid rising concerns about women’s safety in India, the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission has introduced a set of proposed guidelines aimed at enhancing protection for women across the state. The commission discussed these suggestions during a meeting in Lucknow on October 28, with more meetings planned to refine and finalize the guidelines.
Key Safety Proposals by the Women’s Commission
The guidelines aim to address safety in various environments by proposing specific roles and facility requirements. Notably, they include recommendations to restrict certain services by male professionals, such as tailoring and fitness training, to reduce risks and enhance privacy for women.
Himani Agarwal, a commission member, explained the proposals, saying, “During the October 28 meeting, we suggested that only female tailors should take women’s clothing measurements, and that CCTV cameras should be installed in these areas,” as reported by PTI.
Babita Chauhan, chairperson of the women’s commission, introduced the proposals, which received unanimous support from commission members.
Suggested Safety Measures for Women-Focused Spaces
Below are the proposed guidelines shared by the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission:
- Women’s Gyms and Yoga Centers: Only female trainers should be employed, and gym memberships require identity verification through ID cards such as Aadhaar or voter IDs.
- CCTV Requirements: Women’s gyms, yoga studios, and other public areas for women should have functional CCTV with DVR storage.
- School Transport: A female security guard or female staff member must be present on school buses.
- Dance and Drama Centers: Female instructors and operational CCTV systems are required in performing arts centers.
- Tailoring and Boutiques: Only female staff should take clothing measurements in boutique centers, and these facilities should be equipped with CCTV.
- Coaching Centers: Centers should have fully functional CCTV, restroom facilities, and other safety provisions.
- Clothing Stores: Shops selling women’s clothing must employ female staff to assist customers.
These proposals underscore a comprehensive approach to fostering safer spaces for women, with CCTV monitoring and the requirement for female staff in key roles as central components. The UP Women’s Commission aims to establish these guidelines as a benchmark for women’s safety in the state.
