The Election Commission has scheduled a bypoll for Bihar’s Tirhut Graduate constituency in the legislative council, following the vacancy left by JD(U) leader Devesh Chandra Thakur, who recently won a seat in the Lok Sabha. The nomination process for this election begins on November 11 and will close on November 18, according to an official notification from the commission.
Key Election Dates and Details
The deadline for candidates to withdraw their nominations is November 28, with polling set for December 5. Vote counting will take place on December 9. Thakur, a senior figure in the JD(U) and close ally of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, previously held this seat for multiple terms before winning the Sitamarhi constituency in the national elections.
Following his Lok Sabha victory, Thakur also stepped down as chairman of the Bihar Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad). Veteran BJP leader Awadhesh Narain Singh has since taken over as the acting chairman of the Upper House.
Candidate Selection in Progress
Political parties have not yet announced their candidates for the bypoll. However, sources within JD(U) indicate that Abhishek Jha, a dynamic young leader known for his effective public speaking and strong stance on party issues, is the likely candidate.
The upcoming bypoll will determine who will represent the Tirhut Graduate constituency in the Bihar legislative council, filling an important role left open by Thakur’s move to the national stage.
