After months of delays, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) announced that the mayoral election will finally take place on November 14. The decision resolves a prolonged deadlock caused by legal and administrative obstacles that have prevented the election from moving forward.
Reasons Behind the Election Delay
The mayoral election process faced significant delays due to procedural and administrative issues. A key hurdle was the inability to appoint a presiding officer, which requires coordination with the Chief Minister. During the required consultation period, then-Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was in judicial custody, and the Lieutenant Governor chose not to proceed without his input. This impasse led to frequent protests and disruptions in the MCD House by opposition councillors.
After a seven-month wait, MCD officials confirmed that the legal and procedural issues have now been addressed, paving the way for the November 14 election date.
MCD Mayor Election Structure
Under MCD rules, Delhi’s mayoral post operates on an annual rotation system, with each term lasting a single year over a five-year period. This rotation includes specific criteria:
- The first year is reserved for women candidates.
- The second year is open to any candidate.
- The third year is designated for a candidate from a reserved category.
- The final two years return to the open category.
As the upcoming term is the third, it will be reserved for a Dalit candidate. Due to the delayed election, however, the elected mayor will serve a shortened term of just five months.
Candidates for Mayor and Deputy Mayor
For the mayoral election, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Mahesh Khichi, councillor of Devnagar, while Ravinder Bhardwaj from Aman Vihar has been selected as AAP’s candidate for deputy mayor. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Kishan Lal, councillor of Shakurpur, as its mayoral candidate, with Nita Bisht from Sadatpur running for deputy mayor.
The upcoming mayoral election marks a crucial moment for Delhi’s local governance, and both parties are set to compete for leadership in the MCD following months of political tension.
