To equip Ukrainian troops for the complex tactics used by Russian forces, the EU training mission has incorporated Soviet-era tanks borrowed from museums. These tanks, along with Russian-style trench systems, help simulate the realities of Ukraine’s battlefield environment, according to Lieutenant-General Andreas Marlow, head of the EU Special Training Command near Berlin.
Realistic Battlefield Training with Soviet Tanks and Russian Trenches
In Germany, instructors from 17 countries have trained approximately 18,000 Ukrainian soldiers on advanced tanks, precision air defense, sniper skills, engineering, paramedic care, and drone operations. However, the intensive combat and heavy shelling between Russia and Ukraine, reminiscent of World War I trench warfare, require additional training on older equipment that Ukrainian forces are likely to encounter.
To this end, the German military has recreated Russian-style trenches and introduced Soviet-era tanks, commonly used by Russia. “These systems are still used by Russian forces, and sometimes abandoned equipment is booby-trapped,” Marlow explained, highlighting the importance of training soldiers to approach such items carefully to avoid triggering hidden explosives.
EU Mission Expands to Meet Rising Battlefield Demands
Launched in 2022, the EU military mission to support Ukraine was extended by two years as Russian advances accelerate. Beyond older equipment, Ukrainian forces are also being trained on modern simulators and advanced dummies, which allow combat medics to handle realistic, complex injuries.
Drones: A Vital Component of Modern Warfare Training
Drones have become a critical focus of the training program, teaching Ukrainian soldiers both surveillance and defensive strategies. Marlow emphasized the increased importance of drone awareness, noting the ongoing threat posed by Russian drones that frequently monitor or attack from above.
Both Ukraine and Russia have aggressively pursued advancements in drone technology, deploying new models and exploring innovative methods for both offense and defense.
