Prosecutors have charged Daniela Klette, one of the last surviving members of Germany’s infamous Red Army Faction (RAF), with multiple crimes, including robbery, attempted murder, and illegal firearm possession. Klette, who was apprehended in Berlin in February after years on the run, is accused of orchestrating numerous cash heists with two accomplices.
Details of Alleged Crimes
Klette and her two accomplices are accused of stealing over €2.7 million in a series of armed robberies targeting cash transport vehicles and supermarkets between 1999 and 2016. In one incident, during a 2015 robbery in Stuhr, she allegedly aimed a firearm at a cash transporter employee, according to Verden prosecutors.
Her lawyer, however, disputes these claims. In an interview with public TV, he argued that the charge of intentionally aiming and firing at a money transport driver has not been substantiated by the investigation.
Klette’s Background with the Red Army Faction
The Red Army Faction, a far-left militant group, originated in the 1970s amid Germany’s anti-Vietnam War movement and was responsible for the deaths of around 30 people, including politicians, business leaders, and U.S. soldiers. The RAF disbanded in 1998, but Klette and her alleged accomplices are believed to belong to the group’s “third generation,” carrying on with criminal activities after the group’s official end.
Prosecutors Seek Trial
Verden prosecutors allege that Klette formed a gang with her two accomplices, who remain at large, aiming to secure a “steady income” through violent robberies on cash offices and money transports. Now, the Verden district court will decide if the charges against Klette will proceed to trial.
