The United Kingdom is set to urge members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to demand an end to hostilities in Sudan and ensure unhindered access for humanitarian aid. British Foreign Minister David Lammy will lead discussions on a draft resolution co-proposed by the UK and Sierra Leone during a UNSC session on Monday, leveraging the UK’s current presidency of the council.
UK Calls for Protection of Civilians and More Aid
The proposed resolution emphasizes protecting civilians and facilitating aid deliveries to alleviate the devastating impact of the conflict. Lammy will reaffirm the UK’s commitment to Sudan, stating, “The UK will never let Sudan be forgotten.”
As part of this commitment, Britain will double its aid to Sudan, bringing its total contribution to £226 million ($285 million). The announcement comes as the conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has claimed thousands of lives and caused a record-breaking displacement crisis.
Sudan’s Ongoing Crisis
The power struggle in Sudan has left millions in urgent need of assistance, as the planned transition to civilian rule crumbled under the weight of violence. The international community, including the UK, continues to pressure warring parties to prioritize peace and civilian protection.
Addressing Wider Global Crises
In addition to Sudan, Lammy is expected to address other pressing issues during the UNSC session:
Humanitarian Aid in Gaza
Lammy will condemn Israeli restrictions on aid entering Gaza and call for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages. The situation in Gaza remains critical, with international pressure mounting to ease the humanitarian crisis.
Support for Ukraine
On the ongoing war in Ukraine, Lammy will pledge unwavering UK support, reiterating the need to stand firm against Russian aggression. He is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to reinforce Britain’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Global Leadership in Crisis Response
With its UNSC presidency, the UK seeks to spotlight humanitarian crises worldwide and rally global action. The proposed resolution on Sudan, alongside calls for accountability in Gaza and Ukraine, underscores Britain’s broader efforts to address international conflicts and promote peace.
