In a potential move that could drastically reshape U.S. military leadership, members of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team are reportedly drawing up a list of high-ranking military officers for potential removal, including members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This consideration, still in its initial stages, could bring unprecedented changes to the Pentagon, according to two sources familiar with the transition planning who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Early Stage Discussions on Military Reshuffling

Following Trump’s recent election win, the transition team is evaluating plans to replace several top military officials. However, sources caution that these plans are still preliminary and could evolve as the administration solidifies. One insider questioned the feasibility of implementing such a large-scale overhaul within the Pentagon’s leadership.

Trump’s Campaign Rhetoric and Military Relations

Throughout his campaign, Trump has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with certain defense officials, particularly those who have criticized him or were associated with the challenging 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. He has previously hinted at removing what he termed “woke” generals. Whether Trump will endorse or support the proposed firings, however, remains uncertain, as his campaign team has not commented on the matter.

Targeting Milley Affiliates

Sources suggest that the transition team may focus on officers aligned with General Mark Milley, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Milley, known for his past criticisms of Trump, has been a polarizing figure, with Trump’s allies accusing him of disloyalty. “Everyone elevated or appointed by Milley will likely face dismissal,” a source indicated, emphasizing that a comprehensive list of Milley-affiliated personnel has already been assembled.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Under Review

The Joint Chiefs of Staff, which includes the heads of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, National Guard, and Space Force, could see significant changes. Just days ago, Trump named Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News commentator, as his choice for defense secretary. Hegseth has advocated for a “clean sweep” of senior Pentagon officials, asserting in his book The War on Warriors that extensive reforms are essential to strengthen U.S. defense readiness.

While Hegseth’s limited experience in military management could complicate his Senate confirmation, his support for reshaping the Pentagon aligns with Trump’s vision for a streamlined military command.

General Brown Potentially Among First to Exit

Among the officers reportedly on the list for dismissal is Air Force General C.Q. Brown, who succeeded Milley. Hegseth has publicly questioned Brown’s appointment, suggesting it was influenced by racial considerations rather than purely merit-based criteria. A source involved in transition planning confirmed that Brown, along with other Joint Chiefs members, could be asked to step down.

Potential Impact and Challenges of a Pentagon Restructuring

While some current and former officials downplay the likelihood of such extensive changes, citing potential disruptions amid global crises, others believe Trump’s team views the restructuring as a necessary response to perceived bureaucratic excess within the Pentagon. According to sources, the transition team believes that these positions are “replaceable” and sees an opportunity to introduce fresh leadership into senior military roles.

One source pointed to historical examples, such as World War II, when relatively young officers were swiftly promoted to general roles, contributing to the war effort’s success. This, they argue, demonstrates the feasibility of introducing new leadership in a military organization as vast as the U.S. armed forces.
