Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently appeared before the Lokayukta police in connection with an investigation into a controversial land allotment case involving the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). The Lokayukta police, based in Mysuru, filed an FIR on September 27 naming Siddaramaiah, his wife Parvathi, and several others. This ongoing investigation revolves around allegations that MUDA allotted 14 prime real estate plots in Mysuru to Siddaramaiah’s wife under questionable terms.

Details of the MUDA Case

According to the FIR, the MUDA is accused of allotting compensatory sites in the Vijayanagar Layout area, a high-value location in Mysuru, to Parvathi B M, Siddaramaiah’s wife. These plots were allegedly given as part of a “50:50 ratio” scheme, where landowners receive half of the developed land in exchange for undeveloped land acquired by MUDA for residential projects. However, critics argue that Parvathi did not have a valid legal title to the original land acquired by MUDA, raising concerns over the legitimacy of the allotment.

High Court Intervention and Ongoing Legal Actions

The Karnataka High Court, responding to a petition filed by RTI activist Snehamayi Krishna, has taken notice of the case. The petitioner has requested that the investigation be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing the need for impartiality. Justice M. Nagaprasanna, overseeing the matter, has asked the Lokayukta to submit the details of its investigation. The next court hearing is scheduled for November 26.

ED Investigation and Background

In addition to the Lokayukta inquiry, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a report on September 30 to further examine the financial and property transactions related to this case. The ED’s investigation focuses on whether any laws were broken in the allotment of these plots to the Chief Minister’s wife.

Government and Political Responses

Karnataka Congress leaders have expressed their support for Siddaramaiah, suggesting that the case is politically motivated. Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge defended the Chief Minister, noting that Siddaramaiah is cooperating fully with the investigation. Kharge pointed out that similar allegations against political opponents have not led to their resignation, framing the case as a politically charged attack.

Next Steps in the Investigation

Following the High Court’s instructions, a Special Court ordered Lokayukta police to submit an investigation report by December 24. In a recent move, Parvathi B M reportedly asked MUDA to cancel the controversial allotments, which MUDA accepted.

The case has drawn widespread attention, sparking debates over political accountability, land rights, and anti-corruption efforts within the state government.
