With air pollution reaching critical levels in Delhi and surrounding regions, the Indian government has introduced tougher penalties for stubble burning, a major contributor to air pollution in the area. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in parts of the capital has crossed the hazardous 400-mark, prompting immediate action to curb environmental pollution.
New Rules and Fines Targeting Stubble Burning
The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change announced new regulations under the Environmental Protection Act to impose fines based on farm size for those engaged in stubble burning. The updated penalty structure aims to reduce stubble burning by setting specific environmental compensation fees based on land area:
- Less than two acres: Rs 5,000 fine
- Two to five acres: Rs 10,000 fine
- More than five acres: Rs 30,000 fine
The new rules are intended to hold violators accountable while recognizing the financial impact on smaller-scale farmers.
Delhi’s AQI Hits Dangerous Levels
Air quality in Delhi has significantly worsened, with AQI readings reaching over 400 in multiple areas, classifying them as “severe.” Notable AQI measurements include:
- Anand Vihar: 426
- Ashok Vihar: 417
- Bawana: 411
- DTU: 378
- Dwarka Sector 8: 380
Such levels pose serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations. There is concern that pollution could continue to rise if immediate measures are not taken.
Government’s Renewed Efforts to Combat Pollution
These newly enforced penalties are part of a broader strategy to combat air pollution during the winter months, when conditions are typically at their worst. The government aims to improve compliance and curb harmful emissions that degrade air quality.
