On Thursday morning, schools and numerous businesses in Hong Kong were closed after authorities issued a Typhoon Signal No. 8, the city’s third-highest storm warning, as tropical storm Toraji moved within 150 km (93 miles) south of the city.
Toraji Expected to Weaken, Allowing Daytime Reopenings
Hong Kong’s Observatory reported that Toraji is expected to weaken and move away, with winds gradually easing throughout the day. The strong wind alert will be downgraded from Signal No. 8 to Signal No. 3 by 10:20 a.m. (0220 GMT), enabling many businesses to reopen in the afternoon.
Minimal Damage and Ongoing Operations
Early Thursday, roads in central Hong Kong were quiet, and damage appeared limited. The stock market remained open, marking a first for Hong Kong during a typhoon warning. Airport operations and flights continued as usual, the Airport Authority reported. Under a Signal No. 8, public transport typically slows, and residents are advised to stay indoors for safety.
About Toraji: One of Four Regional Storms This Month
Toraji, named after a flower that blooms quietly in Korea’s deep mountains, is one of four storms currently active in the western North Pacific and South China Sea.
