Hezbollah’s Secretary General Naim Qassem stated on Wednesday that ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and the Israeli military would only end through battlefield developments, not diplomatic efforts. Speaking in a pre-recorded televised address, Qassem emphasized that military actions—not political talks—are the only path to halting the conflict.
Battlefield, Not Diplomacy, Seen as Solution
“Our conviction is clear: the only thing that can stop this aggression is the battlefield,” Qassem said. His leadership role in Hezbollah began after the previous leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli strike in September. Qassem dismissed political action as ineffective for ending the year-long conflict, which runs parallel to the Israel-Gaza war.
Potential for Indirect Negotiations if Hostilities Cease
Qassem suggested a possible route for indirect negotiations if Israel chooses to cease its attacks on Lebanon. According to him, any talks would be mediated through the Lebanese state, with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri playing a key role. He noted that negotiations could only proceed if they fully protect Lebanon’s sovereignty, though he did not provide further specifics.
Israel’s Security Concerns and Recent U.S. Proposal
Israel has stated that it seeks to allow displaced residents in northern Israel to return home while ensuring that Hezbollah no longer poses a threat to its security. Last week, a U.S. proposal suggested a 60-day truce, with an additional agreement allowing Israel to act against immediate security threats from Lebanon.
