Exit Polls Ban 2024: In a recent announcement, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has prohibited the release of exit polls for the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. The ban, which will be enforced from 7 am on September 18 until 6:30 pm on October 5, is a routine exercise undertaken by the ECI during elections to ensure fair play.
The notification, issued in accordance with Section 126A of the RP Act, 1951, states, “the period between 7.00 AM on 18.09.2024 (Wednesday) and 6.30 PM on 05.10.2024 (Saturday), as the period during which conducting and publishing or publicising exit poll by means of the print or electronic media or dissemination in any other manner whatsoever, the result of any exit poll in connection with the aforesaid general election, shall be prohibited.”
Exit polls are surveys conducted just after elections to obtain voters’ sentiments post-voting. Unlike pre-election opinion polls, exit polls gather information on who voters actually voted for, making them a more accurate source of data. These polls are usually published right after votes are cast and are conducted by interviewing voters as they exit polling stations. In India, exit polls were first developed by the pioneering Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) in Delhi during the 1960s.
