Shares of Saab rose by 3.4% in Stockholm following the report, as investors responded to the possibility of a new contract with Colombia. A Saab representative acknowledged media reports but clarified that “there is currently no contract” with Colombia, adding that the company has previously engaged in discussions with Colombian officials about the Gripen jets.
Colombia’s Defense Minister Addresses Rumors
In a press conference held in Bogota, Colombia’s Defense Minister Ivan Velasquez dismissed rumors surrounding the potential acquisition, stating, “There’s still nothing definitive. These are just rumors, and there’s no official statement from the government.” Velasquez assured the public that any formal decision would be announced once confirmed by Colombia’s president.
Saab’s Push for Gripen Sales in Latin America
Saab has been working to increase Gripen sales in Latin America, focusing on countries like Colombia and Peru. The company has a production base in Brazil in partnership with Embraer, supporting its efforts to supply advanced fighter jets to the region. Colombia’s interest in new aircraft follows a longstanding plan to modernize its air force by replacing its outdated Kfir fighter jets, originally manufactured by Israel. Negotiations in 2022 with both Saab and France’s Dassault Aviation previously stalled without an agreement.
