In a recent meeting in Kunming, Yunnan Province, Chinese Premier Li Qiang affirmed China’s support for Myanmar’s 2025 election plans and efforts toward political reconciliation. This discussion with Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing, who came to power following the 2021 coup, marks Min’s first official visit to China since taking control.

China’s Endorsement of Myanmar’s Election Strategy

Chinese state media reported that Premier Li offered China’s backing for Myanmar’s upcoming election, scheduled for next year, despite opposition groups refusing to participate and many being barred from contesting. Analysts predict that the election could further solidify the military’s role in governance, a move unlikely to gain recognition from Western nations.

Li commended Myanmar’s military government’s approach to pursuing peace through dialogue and encouraged maintaining open channels with opposition forces. Min Aung Hlaing added that for meaningful peace negotiations, opposition forces must present clear steps toward peace.

Border Stability and Sovereignty Emphasized

Premier Li underscored the importance of stable border control, reiterating China’s commitment to respecting Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This assurance comes amid rising conflict in Myanmar’s border regions, where the “Three Brotherhood Alliance” — composed of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, the Arakan Army, and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army — has made strategic gains.

Strengthening China-Myanmar Cooperation

China aims to reinforce its relationship with Myanmar through the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and called on Myanmar’s authorities to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and interests in the country. Li also stressed the need for collaborative efforts to combat cross-border issues, including online scams and illicit gambling operations.

However, Myanmar’s opposition National Unity Government expressed concerns that China’s engagement with the junta leader could be misunderstood by the people of Myanmar, who continue to experience the impacts of military rule.
