Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has unveiled a new prototype of the Vande Bharat sleeper coach at Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The Vande Bharat sleeper train will undergo rigorous tests and trials over the next 10 days to ensure it meets the high standards of safety and quality before its arrival on the tracks.
Notably, the Vande Bharat train is divided into three sections, including chair car, sleeper, and metro. The Indian government has introduced the chair car version of the Vande Bharat trains and is now ready to launch the much-anticipated sleeper train next. The Vande Bharat trains aim to offer a new experience to passengers as they travel long distances and sleep in the berths.
Railway Minister Vaishnaw announced that the train is expected to start its passenger service in the next three months. “We expect the passenger operation of Vande Sleeper Coach in three months from now,” he said. The minister also laid the foundation stone for a new Vande Bharat manufacturing unit at Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) premises. He added, “After the success of the Vande Bharat chair car, the manufacturing and design of the Vande Bharat Sleeper is something we all have been waiting and working for. The manufacturing of the Vande Bharat sleeper is now complete. In a few days, the Vande Bharat sleeper (coaches) will leave the BEML factory in Bengaluru for testing and trials.”
Railway Minister Vaishnav further added, “Its configuration has been carefully designed with a lot of attention to detail. The needs of the serving staff, whether it’s the loco pilots, maintenance staff, or those serving bedding and food, have been considered. Every toilet has been designed keeping specially-abled individuals in mind. Testing will continue for the next one to two months, and then, most probably, the service will start in about three months.”
In terms of features, the Vande Bharat sleeper coaches will consist of several amenities to ensure convenience and comfort during travel. The coaches will feature reading lamps, charging outlets, a snack table, and a mobile/magazine holder. Each coach will also be equipped with the Kavach collision avoidance system, stainless steel car bodies, automatic doors, crash-worthy passenger safety features, GFRP interior panels, and fire safety compliance. The foot area on the ladder will be improved, with the air conditioning and seat cushions utilizing new technology to guarantee a satisfactory travel experience. Additionally, the sleeper coaches will maintain oxygen levels and eliminate 99.99 percent of viruses.
The new Vande Bharat Express sleeper train will feature 16 coaches, with 823 berths. There will be 11 3AC coaches (611 berths), 4 2AC coaches (188 berths), and 1 1AC coach (24 berths). With the new launch, the Indian government is confident of providing a new and comfortable travel experience for passengers on long journeys across the country.

The train is designed to offer a comfortable travel experience for commuters who require long-distance travel. In a bid to further this development, the Indian government is investing in the rail system with a focus on safety, modern technology and amenities.
Looking at the future of the Indian railways, the introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper coach is expected to enhance India’s transportation network significantly.
