On Wednesday, Ukrainian forces successfully defended against a Russian offensive aimed at breaching defenses near the northeastern city of Kupiansk, according to Ukraine’s General Staff. This region, initially seized by Russian forces during the early days of the February 2022 invasion and later recaptured by Ukraine in a swift counter-offensive, has recently seen renewed Russian military activity.

Russian Assault in Multiple Waves

The General Staff reported that Russian forces launched a four-wave assault using approximately 15 armored units, including tanks, armored vehicles, and a mine-clearing system. “With skillful and decisive actions, our defenders halted the assault, destroying all enemy armored vehicles and inflicting significant personnel losses,” the statement noted.

Some Russian troops reportedly wore Ukrainian-style uniforms, which Ukrainian officials condemned as a potential war crime for its deceptive tactics in combat.

Conflict in Kupiansk and Surrounding Areas

DeepState, a widely-followed Ukrainian military blog, shared that two Russian military columns entered Kupiansk after dark. Russian soldiers dispersed throughout the town, but Ukrainian forces quickly targeted and destroyed armored vehicles within Kupiansk and in nearby forested areas, weakening the assault group.

In a separate update, Ukraine’s General Staff reported intense fighting further south in Pokrovsk, where Russian forces have concentrated their offensive efforts. Despite launching 36 attacks, only one Russian assault broke through Ukrainian lines.

President Zelenskyy’s Focus on Donetsk Region and Kupiansk

In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said top military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi highlighted ongoing Russian advances near Kupiansk and in Donetsk region, a central focus of Russian westward moves. In Donetsk, prosecutors reported that a recent Russian attack killed two civilians in Shevchenko, a village west of Russian-controlled Donetsk city.
