Turkey’s Allies Suggest Constitutional Change to Allow Erdogan to Run Again in 2028

Proposal to Amend Turkey’s Constitution Could Extend Erdogan’s Tenure

A key political ally of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has proposed a constitutional amendment to allow Erdogan to run again in 2028, potentially extending his presidency. After being re-elected last year, Erdogan is serving what is constitutionally considered his final term, unless Turkey’s parliament calls an early election.

Bahceli Calls for Erdogan’s Re-election if Key Issues Are Resolved

Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and a close ally of Erdogan, expressed support for the amendment during a recent parliamentary address. He argued that if Turkey can make substantial progress in defeating terrorism, lowering inflation, and securing political and economic stability, it would be “natural and right” for Erdogan to continue leading.

Bahceli suggested that the amendment would allow Erdogan to pursue his vision for Turkey beyond his current term. The MHP leader’s remarks come as the country faces significant economic and security challenges, including high inflation rates and ongoing conflicts with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Potential Support from the Pro-Kurdish DEM Party

Bahceli recently stirred political debate by proposing that the imprisoned leader of the PKK be permitted to address parliament if he agrees to end the group’s insurgency. Some analysts believe this unusual offer could be part of a strategic move to win the support of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Party (DEM), Turkey’s third-largest party in parliament. Securing DEM’s backing could be crucial if the ruling coalition seeks to pass a constitutional amendment allowing Erdogan to run again.

Legislative Requirements for a Constitutional Amendment

In Turkey’s 600-seat parliament, 360 votes are required to pass a constitutional change and put it to a public referendum. Similarly, an early election would need the support of 360 lawmakers. Erdogan’s ruling AK Party (AKP) and its allies currently hold 321 seats, while the DEM party holds 57. Combined, these numbers could push the proposal forward, giving Erdogan a potential path to extend his leadership into 2028.

Potential Shift in Turkish Politics

As Turkey navigates political and economic hurdles, this proposal could open a pathway for Erdogan to seek another term, contingent on further stability and potential alliances. If successful, it may shape the country’s future, extending Erdogan’s influence on Turkey’s domestic and international policies.
