On Monday, data provider DDHQ projected that the Republican Party, led by President-elect Donald Trump, has likely won a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. This victory, combined with their already-projected Senate majority, positions Republicans to control both chambers of Congress.
House Majority Still Unofficial
Edison Research, another prominent data provider, has not yet confirmed Republican control of the House. Currently, Edison projects Republicans to hold at least 214 seats, including two previously held by Democrats, while Democrats hold at least 205 seats. With 16 seats still undecided, Republicans need 218 seats to secure a majority.
Republicans Take Senate Control
In addition to the House, Edison Research projects that Republicans have already clinched a Senate majority, with at least 52 seats to the Democrats’ 46. If both chambers fall under Republican control, this could signal a significant shift in legislative dynamics.
Legislative Outlook with a Republican-Led Congress
During Trump’s previous term from 2017 to 2021, the Republican-controlled Congress passed sweeping tax cuts, one of his administration’s hallmark achievements. However, these tax cuts are set to expire soon. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s landmark $1 trillion infrastructure bill became law while Democrats controlled both chambers.
The recent two years of divided government saw limited legislative success for Biden, as passing bills became more challenging. With Republicans likely controlling both chambers, the Biden administration may face even more obstacles in advancing its legislative agenda.
