French football star Kylian Mbappé has been named in media reports in connection with an ongoing rape investigation in Sweden, leading to widespread public interest and speculation. The Swedish authorities have confirmed that a senior prosecutor is leading an inquiry into an alleged incident, but they have not officially named Mbappé or any other individual. Despite this, reports linking the French footballer to the case have surfaced, prompting reactions from both Mbappé and his legal team.
Media Frenzy Around Allegations
The investigation stems from an alleged incident that took place at a hotel in central Stockholm on October 10. According to Swedish media reports, Mbappé had been staying in Stockholm for two days, visiting a restaurant and later a nightclub on the night of the alleged incident. The footballer was reportedly seen walking around the city with three other individuals.
Swedish police were later seen visiting the Bank Hotel, where Mbappé had stayed, and were observed leaving with bags that allegedly contained items, including clothing, taken as evidence. However, the Swedish prosecution authority has refrained from providing any further details at this stage, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Mbappé Responds to Allegations
Kylian Mbappé, captain of the French national football team, has strongly denied any involvement in the case. Taking to social media, he dismissed the reports as “FAKE NEWS” to his 14 million followers on X (formerly Twitter). His lawyers have condemned the media coverage, calling the reports defamatory and insisting that no formal charges or accusations have been made against the footballer.
Mbappé’s legal team, led by Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, made a public statement during a French evening news broadcast on TF1, stating that the player was “stunned” by the media frenzy surrounding the allegations. Canu-Bernard emphasized that Mbappé has never been in a situation where he could have acted in a way that would put him at legal risk. “He is never alone. He is never put in a position where he ends up in a situation that would lead to him taking a risk,” she explained, ruling out any possibility of wrongdoing on his part.
Swedish Prosecutor and Lawyer’s Statements
Marina Chirakova, the senior Swedish prosecutor leading the inquiry, confirmed that an official criminal report had been submitted to the police but declined to provide further details. Petra Eklund, the lawyer representing the complainant in the case, also refrained from commenting on the specifics due to legal constraints.
Under Swedish law, the level of suspicion reported in the media suggests the allegations are being treated as a “reasonable suspicion of rape.” This is considered a lower threshold than more formal charges but nonetheless a serious matter under Swedish legal standards. Sweden’s rape laws were reformed in 2018 to broaden the definition of sexual assault, allowing for prosecution if a perpetrator is found to have acted negligently in assessing whether the other party was participating voluntarily.
Legal Backlash and Defamation Claims
In response to the media reports, Mbappé’s legal team is preparing to file a defamation lawsuit, arguing that the claims have tarnished the player’s reputation without evidence. They insist that no formal complaint has been made against Mbappé, and no credible accusations have surfaced thus far. Canu-Bernard, Mbappé’s lawyer, reaffirmed her client’s innocence, stating that the investigation has no connection to him and that the media has sensationalized the story without facts.
Connection to Previous Disputes
In addition to addressing the allegations, Mbappé appeared to draw a connection between the timing of the media reports and an ongoing financial dispute with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The footballer has claimed that PSG owes him €55 million in unpaid wages and bonuses. In a social media post, he hinted that the timing of the Swedish investigation and media reports was suspicious, coming just before a legal hearing in his case against the club. “It’s becoming so predictable, on the eve of the hearing, as if by chance,” Mbappé remarked.
PSG has denied any wrongdoing in the financial dispute, and the case is currently before a French football league appeals committee, with a decision expected on October 25.
