Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Questions Congress Secularism Ahead of Wayanad By-Election
Ahead of the upcoming by-election in Wayanad, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticized Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, alleging she is contesting with support from Jamaat-e-Islami. Speaking at an event in Kerala, Vijayan questioned Congress’s commitment to secularism, suggesting that the party’s alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami contradicted its stated values.
Pinarayi Vijayan’s Challenge to Congress’s Secular Values
In his remarks, Vijayan asked a pointed question about Congress’s approach to secularism, stating, “Should those who claim to uphold secularism oppose all forms of sectarianism?” He argued that Congress’s association with Jamaat-e-Islami raised doubts about its secular stance. “The by-election in Wayanad has unmasked Congress’s stance on secularism. Is Congress comfortable aligning with Jamaat-e-Islami, whose values diverge from democratic principles?” Vijayan stated.
Kerala CM Criticizes Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ideology
Vijayan also took aim at Jamaat-e-Islami, alleging that the group does not align with India’s democratic principles. Referring to past elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Vijayan accused Jamaat-e-Islami of promoting sectarian agendas and claimed that they had once collaborated with the BJP to challenge a CPI(M) candidate in the region.
While Jamaat-e-Islami representatives in Wayanad claim independence from the group’s Kashmir faction, Vijayan argued that their ideology remains consistent, rejecting democratic governance.
“Can Congress Reject Jamaat-e-Islami Support?” Vijayan Asks
Vijayan continued his critique by questioning Congress’s willingness to distance itself from Jamaat-e-Islami’s support. He argued that Congress and its allies, such as the Indian Union Muslim League, appeared willing to accept Jamaat-e-Islami’s support to sustain their coalition. “Can Congress turn down Jamaat-e-Islami’s votes if they truly stand for secularism?” he asked.
Wayanad By-Election Set for November 13
The Wayanad by-election, scheduled for November 13, was triggered after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat, opting to retain Raebareli. The upcoming election has sparked political debate, with Vijayan’s remarks highlighting the tensions around Congress’s alliances and its stance on secularism.
