Kenyan athlete broke world record in Chicago Marathon, as Ruth Chepngetich shattered the women’s marathon world record on Sunday with a remarkable time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 57 seconds. This achievement not only secured her third victory in Chicago but also made her the first woman ever to run a marathon in under two hours and 10 minutes. Chepngetich surpassed the previous world record, set just weeks earlier by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa at the Berlin Marathon, by nearly two minutes.

Chepngetich’s historic run has placed her at the pinnacle of women’s marathon running, marking a significant moment in sports history and cementing Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running.

Chepngetich’s Remarkable Record-Breaking Performance

Kenyan athlete broke world record in Chicago Marathon, demonstrating extraordinary endurance and speed. The 30-year-old marathoner outpaced the previous world record, set by Assefa in September 2023, by an impressive margin. Assefa’s record of 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds had stood as the fastest time in women’s marathon history, but Chepngetich’s new time of 2:09:57 rewrites the record books.

In her post-race interview, Chepngetich expressed overwhelming pride in her achievement. “I feel so great, I’m proud of myself. This is my dream that has come true,” she said. Having narrowly missed out on breaking Brigid Kosgei’s world record by just 14 seconds in the 2022 Chicago Marathon, Chepngetich’s determination and persistence finally paid off.

“I’ve fought a lot thinking about the world record, and I have fulfilled it,” she added, referring to the countless hours of training and focus that led to her record-breaking performance.

A Dominant Force in Chicago

Kenyan athlete broke world record in Chicago Marathon, securing her third win at the prestigious race. The flat and fast course of the Chicago Marathon has been a key stage for record-breaking performances in recent years. Over the past six years, four of the five fastest women’s marathon times have been achieved on this course. Chepngetich’s familiarity with the Chicago route, along with her undeniable talent, helped her achieve this groundbreaking milestone.

In 2022, she came agonizingly close to breaking the world record, finishing just 14 seconds short of Brigid Kosgei’s then-world record time. However, this year, she left no doubt, smashing the record with an unforgettable performance. Chepngetich’s victory in Chicago further solidifies her reputation as one of the top marathon runners in the world today.

The Men’s Race: Kenya’s Continued Dominance

While Kenyan athlete broke world record in Chicago Marathon in the women’s race, the men’s competition also saw Kenya’s John Korir claim victory with a personal-best time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 44 seconds. Korir emerged from a group of leading runners to finish first, dedicating his win to the late Kelvin Kiptum, the previous record holder who tragically passed away in a car accident earlier this year.

Korir praised Kiptum’s world-record performance from the previous year, saying that it served as his motivation during the race. “Today I was thinking about Kiptum and I said, ‘Last year if he could run under 2:01, why not me?’ So I had to believe in myself and try to do my best,” Korir remarked.

The men’s race also featured a strong showing from other Kenyan runners, with four of the top five finishers hailing from Kenya, underscoring the country’s continued dominance in long-distance running.

A New Era for Women’s Marathon Running

Kenyan athlete broke world record in Chicago Marathon, and Chepngetich’s performance has sparked a new era for women’s marathon running. With athletes like Chepngetich and Assefa continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible, the future of women’s marathon running looks brighter than ever.

Chepngetich’s accomplishment marks a turning point, as she becomes the first woman to break the two-hour and 10-minute barrier. This achievement will inspire a new generation of athletes to aim for even faster times and continue to elevate the sport.
