Israeli Strikes on Damascus Leave 15 Dead, Targeting Militant Strongholds
Israeli airstrikes on Thursday killed 15 people in residential areas of Damascus, Syrian state media reported. Israel stated that these operations targeted military sites and headquarters of the Islamic Jihad group, which it considers a threat. The strikes hit residential buildings in the suburbs of Mazzeh and Qudsaya in western Damascus, areas known for housing military-affiliated individuals.
Rising Tensions Prompt Escalated Strikes in Syria
Israel has long conducted air raids on Iran-linked sites in Syria but has significantly increased these attacks following the October 7 escalation by Hamas against Israel, which has since expanded into a wider Gaza conflict. According to local sources, Mazzeh has previously housed members of Hezbollah and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, along with Palestinian groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Explosions and Further Strikes Heard Across Damascus Countryside
Later that night, additional explosions were reported in the Damascus countryside, although Syrian state television did not specify the nature of these incidents. Syrian media also confirmed that an Israeli airstrike destroyed a bridge in Qusayr, a strategic area near Syria’s border with northern Lebanon.
