Dutch Officials Condemn Attacks on Israeli Soccer Fans in Amsterdam

In response to recent attacks on Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar met with Dutch Justice Minister David van Weel and far-right politician Geert Wilders on Friday afternoon to address the incidents. The Israeli fans, in Amsterdam to support Maccabi Tel Aviv in a match against Ajax, faced targeted assaults that left at least five injured, though all were discharged from the hospital later that day.

Dutch Justice Minister Denounces Violence

Following the meeting, Dutch Justice Minister van Weel expressed his strong condemnation of the violence, stating on social media platform X, “The Netherlands strongly condemns this violence, and there is no place for hatred or anti-Semitism.” He assured that authorities would pursue and prosecute those responsible.

Common Stance Against Anti-Semitism

Geert Wilders, leader of the Netherlands’ largest political party, also met with Saar, reaffirming a shared commitment to combatting anti-Semitism and radical ideologies. Known for his strong anti-Muslim stance, Wilders told Saar that “radical Islamic values have no place in a free society.” Wilders had earlier conveyed his “anger and shame” over the attacks in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Dutch Prime Minister’s Engagement with Jewish Community Leaders

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, who was attending an EU summit in Budapest when the incidents occurred, spoke with Netanyahu on Friday and is expected to return early to meet with Amsterdam’s Jewish community representatives. A spokesperson for Schoof confirmed that the Prime Minister would discuss the impact of these assaults and offer support to affected communities.

This high-level engagement underscores the Dutch government’s stance against anti-Semitism and its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors in the Netherlands.
