Delhi CM Atishi Reinstates 10,000 Civil Defence Volunteers to Tackle Air Pollution
In a renewed effort to address Delhi’s air pollution crisis, Chief Minister Atishi announced the reinstatement of 10,000 Civil Defence Volunteers (CDVs) to assist in pollution control. The decision comes after directions from Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena during a recent meeting on Delhi’s worsening air quality. The reinstated CDVs will resume their roles as bus marshals, a position they previously held until their services were terminated last October.
Reinstatement to Begin Amid Political Tensions
CM Atishi confirmed at a press conference that the reinstatement proposal has been approved, with the process set to begin on Monday. She criticized the BJP for terminating the marshals’ services last year and halting their salaries, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that “under Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership, the Delhi government has worked to provide jobs to these marshals again.” She added that, despite political challenges, the AAP government remains committed to serving the people of Delhi.
LG Saxena Calls for CDV Deployment to Address Pollution
In an earlier directive issued on October 24, LG VK Saxena called for the deployment of Civil Defence Volunteers to support pollution mitigation efforts in Delhi over the next four months. His directive was part of a Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) meeting focused on the capital’s air quality.
Planning for Future Employment of CDVs
LG Saxena further advised the Delhi government to develop a comprehensive plan for CDVs’ long-term employment after the four-month period, aiming to ensure job security for the marshals while maintaining continuity in air pollution control efforts. He emphasized the need for a structured approach to prevent future employment uncertainties for the volunteers.
Delhi Government Takes Action Against Pollution with Reinstated Bus Marshals
The reinstatement of 10,000 bus marshals reflects the Delhi government’s ongoing efforts to tackle severe air pollution and provide employment for Civil Defence Volunteers. As Delhi faces increasing air quality challenges, these marshals will play a critical role in supporting the capital’s pollution control measures.
