Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to participate in the G20 summit and hold bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The visit aims to strengthen ties between the two nations and enhance cooperation on economic and international issues, Chinese state media reported.

Focus on Strengthening China-Brazil Relations

In a statement, Xi expressed his eagerness to engage with President Lula on strategies to deepen collaboration. The discussions will cover development initiatives, trade, and pressing global and regional matters.

Xi highlighted his personal connection to Brazil, stating he has visited the country four times over the past 30 years and has closely observed its progress. This year, China and Brazil celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, further underlining the importance of the partnership.

Growing Trade Between China and Brazil

China remains Brazil’s largest trading partner, with trade between the two nations increasing by 9.9% in the first ten months of 2024 compared to the previous year, according to Xinhua. Their economic relationship spans key industries, solidifying both countries’ positions within the BRICS group of emerging economies.

Strengthening Economic Cooperation

Xi’s visit marks his second trip to Brazil in five years, underscoring the growing importance of their bilateral relations. Both nations are expected to explore new areas of economic collaboration, aligning their development strategies to create more robust trade and investment opportunities.
