Bihar’s New Job Program for Medal-Winning Athletes

The Bihar government, under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has introduced the ‘Direct Recruitment Rules of Bihar Outstanding Sportspersons 2023’ to support athletes who excel in national and international sports. Modeled on the “Medal Lao Naukri Pao” initiative, this program aims to increase young people’s interest in sports by offering direct government jobs to athletes who earn medals.

Job Opportunities for Athletes Under the New Scheme

Recently, 71 athletes have secured government jobs under this scheme. Two of them were appointed to higher-level positions, including Child Development Project Officer and Block Panchayati Raj Officer. The remaining athletes were placed in roles such as Police Sub-Inspector, Superintendent, Data Entry Operator, and Clerk within the Social Welfare Department.

Eligibility and Direct Recruitment for High-Achieving Athletes

The program guarantees job placements for athletes who perform exceptionally in sports competitions, allowing them to enter government service without the need for exams or interviews. High achievers can attain prestigious positions like Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) or Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). Since 2010, over 342 athletes in Bihar have benefited from this initiative, with the government directly appointing them to roles across various departments.

Expanding Sports Infrastructure in Bihar

The Bihar government is committed to creating a supportive sports environment. The state has already constructed around 250 stadiums at the block level, and it continues to send promising athletes for training beyond the state’s borders. These infrastructure developments aim to provide young athletes with the facilities needed to hone their skills while balancing academics.

A Legacy of Support: Government Jobs for Athletes

This initiative builds on a longstanding commitment by Chief Minister Kumar, who has consistently advocated for athletes’ career support. In 2010, he promised government jobs to medal-winning athletes, mirroring a similar approach he implemented as the Railway Minister, where he provided railway jobs to talented sportspeople. By 2011, the program had supported 271 athletes with clerical positions, further encouraging athletic participation across the state.

Boosting Sports and Career Opportunities in Bihar

With the ‘Medal Lao Naukri Pao’ scheme and a range of new infrastructure projects, Bihar is empowering athletes to pursue their dreams while ensuring job security. This comprehensive approach to sports development reflects the government’s commitment to building a stronger, sports-driven culture in Bihar.
