The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced on Saturday, September 7, the return of Khamis Othman AL Hammadi Otham, a Kerala man accused of a 2005 assault on a newspaper proprietor. The CBI revealed that Otham, against whom a Red Notice was issued, has been apprehended by the Kerala Police upon his arrival in India from the UAE, marking a significant development in the long-standing case.
Otham stands accused of a vicious attack on Shamsudheen, the owner of ‘The Criminal’ newspaper in Kozhikode, Kerala. The assault, which occurred on July 15, 2005, involved Otham and two accomplices deliberately knocking down Shamsudheen, who was riding a motorcycle as a pillion passenger on KP Chandran Road in Kasaba. Subsequently, they proceeded to assault him with a sword in an attempt to take his life, resulting in severe injuries to Shamsudheen.
The CBI, functioning as the National Central Bureau for INTERPOL in India, cooperated with the Kerala Police and INTERPOL NCB-Abu Dhabi to successfully trace Otham’s whereabouts and bring him back to India. With the aid of geo-location data and collaboration with INTERPOL NCB-Abu Dhabi, Otham’s return was facilitated, paving the way for him to face the legal consequences of his alleged actions.
The arrest and return of Otham after nearly two decades shed light on the enduring commitment of law enforcement agencies in pursuing justice. The collaboration between international and national authorities underscored the resolute determination to hold the accused accountable for his actions.
As Otham faces legal proceedings in connection with the assault case, authorities aim to ensure that justice prevails and the victim, Shamsudheen, receives the closure and resolution he deserves after enduring the traumatic incident. This development remains a crucial step in the pursuit of justice and upholding the rule of law.
