In a tragic and shocking incident, a mother was killed in a false extortion attempt in Agra, after being subjected to a four-hour scam that ultimately led to her death. The victim, Malti Verma, a government school teacher, suffered a heart attack during a relentless digital extortion attempt, in which a scammer falsely claimed that her daughter was involved in a scandal. This heartbreaking incident has sparked widespread concern about the growing menace of online scams and their devastating impact.

The Extortion Scam That Led to Tragedy

The incident occurred on September 30 in the Shahganj Albatiya area of Agra, Uttar Pradesh. At around noon, Malti Verma received a disturbing WhatsApp call from a man posing as a police inspector. The caller, using an image of himself in a police uniform to appear legitimate, falsely claimed that Verma’s daughter had been caught in a sex racket and that her reputation was in jeopardy. To prevent further damage and ensure her daughter’s release, the scammer demanded Rs 1 lakh (approximately $1,200) within 15 minutes, threatening to leak compromising videos if the money was not paid.

Shocked and distressed by the allegations, Malti Verma, like any concerned mother, quickly sought to gather the money, fearing the worst for her daughter. She turned to her son, Deepanshu, for help and asked him to transfer the demanded sum. However, the extreme emotional stress and anxiety from the call took a toll on her health. Before any action could be taken, Verma suffered a massive heart attack.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, Malti Verma tragically passed away, leaving her family devastated and in shock over the sudden loss.

Discovery of the Scam

Deepanshu, who had been trying to assist his mother during the ordeal, soon realized that the entire call was a well-orchestrated scam. Upon further investigation, he noticed suspicious details: the caller had provided two different phone numbers—one originating from India and another from Pakistan. After confirming that his sister was safe and that no such scandal had occurred, it became clear that the false extortion attempt had led to his mother’s death.

“By the time I could assure her that the call was fake, it was too late. My mother was already gone,” said Deepanshu, recounting the painful sequence of events. He immediately reported the incident to the local police, providing them with all the information, including the caller’s phone numbers and the nature of the scam.

Police Investigation Underway

Authorities in Agra have launched an intensive investigation into the case. The police are working to trace the origin of the WhatsApp call and identify the scammer behind the false extortion attempt. Local law enforcement officials have acknowledged the severity of the incident, stating that this may be one of the first recorded deaths directly linked to a digital extortion scam.

Speaking on the matter, a senior police officer said, “This is an extremely disturbing case, and we are leaving no stone unturned in tracking down the person responsible for this heinous act. It is tragic that a scam of this nature could lead to the loss of an innocent life.”

Authorities are also urging citizens to remain vigilant against such scams, advising people to verify the authenticity of any suspicious calls and report them to the police immediately.

Growing Concern Over Digital Scams

The case has brought to light the growing threat of digital extortion and online scams, which have become increasingly common in recent years. Criminals often use fake identities and fear tactics to manipulate their victims into paying large sums of money, preying on their vulnerabilities. In this particular case, the scammer exploited a mother’s instinct to protect her child, ultimately leading to a fatal outcome.

Experts have called for stronger measures to combat cybercrime, including increased public awareness campaigns, more robust digital security systems, and stricter laws to penalize scammers. The tragic death of Malti Verma has underscored the need for better protection against these types of fraudulent activities.

Conclusion

The story of a mother killed in a false extortion attempt in Agra serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by digital scams. What started as a simple phone call ended in the loss of an innocent life, leaving a family grieving and a community on edge. As the police continue their investigation, there is hope that those responsible for this cruel crime will be brought to justice, and that steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

In a time when digital fraud is on the rise, this incident highlights the importance of staying vigilant, informed, and cautious in the face of unknown threats.
