President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would not seek the Democratic nomination for a second term in the White House, leaving the Democratic Party in an unprecedented position with the task of deciding who will fill his shoes in the upcoming 2024 presidential race.
Kamala Harris, Biden’s running mate for the past four years and current Vice President, is the most likely contender for the Democratic nomination. Biden formally endorsed Harris on the same day he announced his withdrawal. However, Harris has struggled to make substantial contributions in her role, which is often low profile. She faced dismal approval ratings in the early years of her tenure as vice president.
Despite this, a poll released last week by The Associated Press news agency and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 74 percent of Democrats had a “favorable” opinion of Harris, while 43 percent of overall respondents shared the same view.
Harris also has the support of several members of Congress, including Representative Jim Clyburn, a former supporter of Biden. Speaking to USA Today earlier this month, Clyburn pledged his support for Harris if Biden was not in the running.
Having previously served as attorney general of California and a US senator, Harris is well placed to take on the mantle of Democratic nominee and the responsibilities of the presidency if elected. While there are other potential candidates for the nomination, Harris is the front runner and has already received endorsements from influential members of the party.
The Democratic National Convention, scheduled for August 19, will see delegates cast their votes for Biden’s successor. However, with Biden’s announcement, the focus is now firmly on Harris as the most likely contender for the Democratic nomination.
