The Greek government announced on Saturday that former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has been expelled from the ruling New Democracy party’s parliamentary group. The decision came after Samaras criticized key government policies in a newspaper interview, drawing strong reactions from party leaders.
Criticism of Government Policy
Samaras, a prominent lawmaker, voiced his disapproval of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis in an interview with the Greek newspaper VIMA. He particularly criticized the government’s renewed negotiations with Turkey, accusing it of pre-emptively signaling concessions.
“The government is entering dialogue by openly stating it will make concessions from its initial positions,” Samaras stated, reflecting his opposition to the administration’s foreign policy approach.
Government Responds with Expulsion
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis defended the expulsion, stating that Samaras’ remarks went beyond expressing views and demonstrated outright disagreement with the government’s direction.
“The government majority remains firm on its path, without Mr. Samaras,” Marinakis said in a statement. “No one has the right to jeopardize the stability of the country, especially during such challenging times.”
Impact on Parliamentary Majority
With Samaras’ expulsion, the ruling New Democracy party’s seats in the 300-member Greek parliament drop to 155. Despite the reduction, the government retains a majority, ensuring it can continue implementing its policies.
Diplomatic Challenges with Turkey
The controversy arises as Greece and Turkey recently resumed discussions to address longstanding disputes. While the government sees the talks as an opportunity for improved relations, critics like Samaras warn against compromising national interests.
