Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi dismissed reports of a meeting between Tehran’s UN envoy and U.S. billionaire Elon Musk, calling it a “fabricated story” in an interview with state television on Saturday. The claims, published by American media, were also denied earlier by Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

Speculation Surrounds Alleged Meeting

The New York Times reported on Thursday that Musk, an adviser to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, allegedly met Iran’s UN ambassador on Monday. Araqchi refuted the story, suggesting it was an attempt by U.S. media to gauge the possibility of such a meeting.

“This claim is baseless and likely a test to assess if the groundwork exists for such talks,” Araqchi stated. He emphasized that Iran is awaiting clear policy directions from the incoming U.S. administration before making strategic adjustments.

Iran’s Leadership Denies Authorization

Araqchi clarified that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the ultimate authority in Iran, had not authorized any such meeting. “No permission was given for such an engagement,” he said, further underscoring the inappropriateness of such talks at this time.

Tensions Over Iran’s Nuclear Program

Meanwhile, relations between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) remain strained. Key issues include Iran’s restrictions on IAEA experts and unresolved questions about uranium traces found at undeclared sites. Araqchi warned of a critical period ahead, stating, “Our nuclear path in the coming year will be sensitive and complex. We are prepared for either confrontation or cooperation.”

Reassessment of the 2015 Nuclear Deal

Araqchi also commented on the 2015 nuclear agreement, which the U.S. exited in 2018 under Trump. “The deal no longer holds its past value for Iran,” he noted. While it might serve as a framework for future negotiations, he stressed the need for a more practical and equitable agreement.
