Andhra Pradesh Launches First Seaplane Service, Aiming to Boost Tourism and Regional Connectivity

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated the state’s first seaplane demonstration flight on November 9, marking a significant step toward establishing Andhra Pradesh as a leader in water-based aviation in India. The demonstration flight, which took off from Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada and headed to Srisailam, is set to provide momentum for the development of water aerodromes—special areas designated for seaplane operations.

Seaplane Service Aims to Drive Tourism and Economic Growth

During the launch, Chief Minister Naidu emphasized that the seaplane initiative is a game-changer for tourism in Andhra Pradesh, stating, “Tourism is the future. Seaplanes will create jobs, generate wealth, and offer new experiences.” He added that tourism is being treated as an industry in Andhra Pradesh, positioning the state as a premier destination for water-based aviation.

The Chief Minister also noted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support for seaplane operations, underscoring that seaplanes require less infrastructure than traditional airports, making them a cost-effective way to expand air connectivity.

Eight Locations Selected for Seaplane Services Across Andhra Pradesh

In collaboration with the state government, the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Ltd (APADCL) has identified eight potential sites for seaplane services to attract more visitors and facilitate easier access to scenic locations. The selected locations include:

  • Prakasam Barrage (Vijayawada)
  • Araku
  • Lambasingi
  • Rushikonda
  • Kakinada
  • Konaseema
  • Srisailam
  • Tirupati

The government’s goal is to create accessible routes to beautiful and remote destinations, enhancing regional tourism and stimulating the local economy.

Water Aerodromes: A New Era of Air Connectivity in Andhra Pradesh

Water aerodromes, which require fewer resources and can be built more quickly than traditional airports, are seen as a solution for expanding air travel access in areas lacking runway-based airports. This new infrastructure will allow for regular seaplane operations in Andhra Pradesh, bridging the gap in transportation options to scenic but remote regions.

Seaplane Operations to Transform Andhra Pradesh’s Aviation and Tourism Landscape

Rammohan Naidu, Civil Aviation Minister of Andhra Pradesh, highlighted that this initiative represents a new chapter in the state’s aviation industry, promising to reshape tourism and connectivity. He noted that previous attempts to launch seaplane services were hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, but renewed efforts now aim to turn Andhra Pradesh into a hub for water-based aviation.

Seaplane Services to Drive Tourism and Employment in Andhra Pradesh

The introduction of seaplane services signals a transformative shift for Andhra Pradesh, enhancing tourism and providing economic opportunities through job creation and better accessibility. As seaplane operations grow, Andhra Pradesh aims to leverage its natural beauty and extensive coastline to attract both domestic and international tourists, setting an example for water-based aviation across India.
