Pope Francis paid a personal visit on Tuesday to Emma Bonino, a well-known Italian politician who has been a prominent advocate for human rights and abortion rights since the 1970s. Despite his traditional opposition to abortion, Francis brought Bonino roses and chocolates, symbolizing a gesture of respect and compassion.
A photo shared by Bonino on social media captured the two figures, both in wheelchairs, enjoying the sun on her terrace in Rome. Bonino, 76, recently returned home after a hospital stay due to respiratory and heart conditions, and previously overcame an eight-year battle with lung cancer. Pope Francis, 87, has also faced health issues in recent years, adding a sense of mutual understanding to their meeting.
A Connection Beyond Politics
The pope, who has been vocal in his opposition to abortion, often referring to it as “murder,” has nevertheless developed relationships with some anticlerical figures in Italian public life. Bonino, a former leader in the Italian parliament, helped legalize abortion in Italy in 1978 and has continued to champion social justice causes throughout her career. Her work includes serving in various high-profile government roles, such as Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Affairs, and as a European Commissioner in the 1990s.
After his visit to the nearby Pontifical Gregorian University, Pope Francis stopped by Bonino’s apartment in central Rome. The Vatican confirmed the visit but did not provide further details.
Bonino’s Tribute to Pope’s Humanity
On social media, Bonino expressed her gratitude for the pope’s visit, describing him as having “extraordinary humanity.” She also shared that the pope called her “an example of freedom and resilience.” The interaction demonstrated the pope’s openness and empathy, despite their differing views on some social issues.
As he left her residence, Francis was briefly asked by a journalist about Bonino’s condition. He simply replied, “Very well,” according to Italian media reports.
This warm visit highlights Pope Francis’ commitment to compassion and connection, underscoring his approach to bridge differences and recognize the dignity of every individual.
