In a bold statement, IAF Chief claims India has Israel-like capabilities when it comes to China, emphasizing the growing strength and self-reliance of India’s defense systems. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh made these remarks on Friday while discussing India’s defense preparedness and air power, citing the 2019 Balakot airstrikes as proof of India’s ability to strike decisively against adversaries.

India’s Capabilities Comparable to Israel

Addressing a gathering, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh compared India’s defense capabilities to Israel, drawing parallels with Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah. Singh noted that India’s 2019 airstrikes on Balakot demonstrated India’s readiness to target enemies with precision, similar to Israel’s recent actions in Lebanon.

Referring to Israel’s airstrikes on Hezbollah leaders, Singh asserted that India possesses similar capabilities to strike adversaries when necessary. “We have demonstrated our ability to strike hard and strike fast, and the Balakot airstrikes were a clear example of that,” Singh remarked. He also stressed the importance of bolstering India’s defense systems, particularly with the help of ‘Make in India’ and other self-reliance initiatives.

Enhanced Air Defense Systems: India’s Version of Iron Dome

The IAF Chief’s claim that India has Israel-like capabilities when it comes to China was supported by his emphasis on enhancing India’s air defense infrastructure. Singh announced that India is working on developing the Kusha System, an Extended Range Air Defense System (ERADS) that could serve as an equivalent to Israel’s Iron Dome.

“We need technology like the Iron Dome to protect our airspace and installations, and while we don’t have all the necessary tech yet, we are making rapid strides in acquiring and developing it,” Singh stated. He emphasized that more advanced weaponry and air defense systems are on the way, including the Akash missile system and medium-range surface-to-air missile systems (MRSAM).

Strengthening Infrastructure and Addressing Supply Chain Issues

While India is focused on improving its technological edge, Singh also addressed challenges such as supply chain disruptions. Despite these issues, he affirmed that India is managing the situation effectively. The IAF has allocated Rs 56,000 crore to procure Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark II, radars, missiles, and other weapons, further demonstrating India’s commitment to building a robust defense system.

On the subject of China, Singh spoke candidly about the growing infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), noting that China has been developing rapidly in the region. To counter this, India is also ramping up its infrastructure in Ladakh. He highlighted that the Indian Air Force currently has 83 Light Combat Aircraft (LCAs) and is preparing to acquire 97 additional Mark I and Mark II aircraft. Furthermore, India is reinforcing its airfields and advanced landing grounds, particularly in strategic locations like Nyoma in southern Ladakh.

India’s Preparedness Against Intrusions

IAF Chief claims India has Israel-like capabilities when it comes to China, emphasizing that India is fully prepared to defend its borders. Singh assured that India is ready to face any intrusions, with radars activated 24/7 and aircraft on high alert. “We are continuously upgrading our offensive and defensive systems, including acquiring counter-drone technologies to stay ahead of potential threats,” Singh added.

Future Plans and Enhancements

While discussing future defense procurements, Singh mentioned that delays in the delivery of certain key defense systems, such as Russia’s S-400 surface-to-air missile systems, have been a challenge. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has slowed down delivery timelines, but India has already received three units, with two more expected by next year.

India’s ambitious plans to expand its defense capabilities also include overcoming delays in the production of Tejas aircraft. Singh noted that if 24 aircraft are produced annually, it would adequately meet the Air Force’s needs.

Self-Reliance and ‘Make in India’

A key theme of Singh’s address was self-reliance. He reiterated the importance of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) and Make in India initiatives in building a strong defense force. “We are on the right track, and with each new indigenous system we develop, we are becoming more independent and capable of responding to any threat, particularly from adversaries like China,” Singh said.

Conclusion

As IAF Chief claims India has Israel-like capabilities when it comes to China, it signals India’s growing confidence in its defense systems and readiness to handle potential conflicts. With initiatives like Make in India and ongoing enhancements to air defense, India is positioning itself as a major military power capable of responding effectively to regional threats. Singh’s statements underscore India’s commitment to building a self-reliant and technologically advanced defense system, with the IAF at the forefront of safeguarding the nation’s interests.
