In a tragic incident, 4 Kanwariya pilgrims were killed in an accident by an SUV in Bihar’s Banka district on October 18. The accident took place in Nagardih village under the jurisdiction of Fullidumar police station, where a speeding SUV mowed down the pilgrims as they were on their religious journey. The Kanwariyas, part of a larger group, were carrying Ganga water from Ajgavinath Dham in Sultanganj, heading towards Deoghar to offer it to Lord Shiva when the unfortunate accident occurred.

Details of the Incident

The 4 Kanwariya pilgrims killed in an accident by an SUV were walking through Nagardih village when the speeding vehicle lost control and struck them. According to reports from local authorities, several others were critically injured in the incident, and the victims were immediately rushed to Sadar Hospital in Banka. Two of the injured are reported to be in critical condition, receiving emergency medical attention.

Bablu Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Fullidumar police station, confirmed the details of the accident, adding that the driver of the SUV fled the scene immediately after the crash. “As soon as we received information about the accident, we rushed to the site and rescued the injured individuals,” said SHO Kumar. Authorities are now actively investigating the case, and efforts are underway to trace the driver and the vehicle involved.

Community Reaction and Aftermath

Following the tragic incident, the atmosphere in Nagardih became tense as a large crowd gathered at the accident site. The local community, angered by the deaths of the Kanwariya pilgrims, expressed their frustration, leading to a law and order situation. When a Police Control Room Vehicle (DIAL 112) arrived to provide assistance, the agitated crowd set the police vehicle on fire in a fit of rage. Additionally, some members of the mob pelted stones at the police officers, resulting in injuries to several personnel.

SDPO Bipin Bihari stated, “There was some law and order situation initially, but the situation is now under control. Police are present at the spot.” To manage the unrest, a large police force from more than six nearby police stations was deployed to the area. Senior officers are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further violence.

Investigation and Legal Action

Authorities in Bihar are investigating the accident that killed 4 Kanwariya pilgrims. SHO Bablu Kumar assured the public that the district police are working diligently to identify and apprehend the driver responsible for the accident. “The driver fled the scene immediately, but we are making every effort to locate him and take appropriate legal action,” he said.

Efforts to restore order and calm in the village are ongoing, with local officials working to bring the area under control. Law enforcement is also in the process of identifying the deceased victims and notifying their families of the tragedy.

Significance of the Kanwar Yatra

The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage observed by millions of devotees of Lord Shiva across India. Pilgrims, known as Kanwariyas, collect sacred water from holy rivers like the Ganga and carry it over long distances to offer it at Shiva temples, particularly in places like Deoghar. The religious journey often involves walking through highways, villages, and remote areas, making the Kanwariyas vulnerable to accidents, especially when passing through busy or poorly regulated roads.

In this case, the Kanwariyas who were killed in the accident were en route to the revered Baba Baidyanath Temple in Deoghar, Jharkhand, when the speeding SUV hit them. The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of pilgrims during the Kanwar Yatra, especially in areas prone to traffic-related dangers.

Government and Police Response

In the wake of the accident, the state government and local authorities have promised swift action to prevent further such tragedies. Senior police officials have vowed to intensify efforts to locate the driver responsible for the deaths of the 4 Kanwariya pilgrims. Additionally, the local administration has called for increased safety measures along pilgrimage routes, urging drivers to be more cautious in areas frequented by religious devotees.

The situation in Nagardih remains tense but under control, with a heavy police presence ensuring that no further violence or disruption takes place. Authorities are working closely with community leaders to restore peace in the region and provide support to the families affected by the tragic loss.

Conclusion

The accident that claimed the lives of 4 Kanwariya pilgrims has left the community in shock and mourning. As Bihar authorities continue their investigation, the focus now shifts to ensuring justice for the victims and taking steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The tragic deaths of the Kanwariya pilgrims highlight the need for stricter safety measures during religious pilgrimages, particularly for those traveling on foot across busy or hazardous routes.
